Julia Cloud had a gentle, caring spirit, devoting her life to her Lord Jesus and caring for others, including her invalid mother. After her mother's death she was faced with a bleak life of poverty until an unexpected visit from her wealthy niece and nephew completely changed her life. They were off to college and wanted "Cloudy Jewel", their childhood nickname for Julia, to come and be their mother and chaperone. Thus started a new adventure for all three, full of love and happiness.

This is one of Grace Livingston Hill's better books. I love them all, but some are just a cut above.

Julia Cloud has had a challenging life taking care of others. After her mother's death she is offered a position being her sister's servant. Without having any better offer, Julia turns down her sister's offer only to get a hige surprise.

Julia is able to be a mother to two orphans and to bless them and their college friends with her faith and wisdom.

This is one of my favorite Grace Livingston Hill books, and I listen to it every few months.

Beautiful Book about Faith and Homemaking

In the case of Cloudy Jewel by Grace Livingston Hill, it’s a typical story which reflects the mores of the times, with triumph, true love and plenty of Christianity. It’s acceptable to me, but gets a little preachy, as most of her books do.
What made listening difficult is the narrator, Paula Faye Leinweber. Her voice is fine until she reads the college girl’s words. College girls don’t talk with high pitched voices. It’s like chalk on a blackboard every time she does it! Who thought that was a good idea?
Please. Don’t do it again.
If anyone bothers to read these reviews, I’d love to purchase The Gold Shoe, Head of the House, The Christmas Bride. Next time you’re deciding which of Livingston’s books to offer, do ask someone who’s actually read all of her books. There’s plenty of fans you might ask.

A narrator can make or break a story.
