Sociologist-economist Sowell, a noted conservative, draws this collection of essays from his Scripps-Howard syndicated column and his contributions to the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Washington Post.

Sowell offers opinions on social and foreign policy, law, education, and race, criticizing the trend of American politics since Reagan and reserving his sharpest criticism for special-interest groups, such as homosexual lobbies, welfare and pay-equity beneficiaries, and political "victims" of all kinds. His essays are tied together by an analysis of the costs and benefits of various concepts, proposals, and actions, and an emphasis on common sense.

Critic reviews

"Known as an expert in the economics and politics of race, [Sowell] is also a thinker of wide-ranging interests, as attested by these provocative writings." (Library Journal)

Amazing how much earlier he spotted the scary stuff of today. I need to read/listen to the rest of his stuff.

Copy and paste this from the first half of the 1980's right into 2021 and it will fit perfectly.

As always - Sowell's narratives on controversial political subjects shine an array of light on pressing socio-politial atmospheres that have otherwise been dimmed by way of gross misrepresentations and political jargon. CVGAOE demystifies these constructs with a gracious precision that both enthralls and educates readers in a way that only Sowell can.

I truly think that Thomas Sowell must be the most intelligent man on Earth. I’ve read several of his books and watched multiple interviews with him on Uncommon Knowledge. His research is impeccable - his insights outstanding! I love the way he looks beyond the surface and delves deep into logic. He asks, if we do X, what will be the likely outcomes? Not just the immediate outcome, but, longterm. It is excellent life advice to ask, “What would happen next? And then what?” He considers all of the probable and likely outcomes.
If only our political leaders and scholars had his wisdom!
For those who want to get to know this man, I recommend starting with The Thomas Sowell Reader.
We are blessed to have this man among us. He is highly educated, yet still SO intelligent. ;)
Also, the narrator was wonderful. He actually sounds much like Thomas Sowell.
