When his father dies, Jawad is left alone in a strange city and with a strange power that pulses within him. He pushes this power deep inside, unwilling to use it--this is the dreaded voa, the power that had once destroyed the Kingdom. He doesn't need it, he figures. He has his quick wit and thievery to fall back on.

As a thief, he does well enough for himself. But when his attempt to rob the Assassins' Guild fails, he needs to go into hiding.

At a safehouse, he meets a young woman, Alara. He keeps his powers hidden from her. She also has her secrets.

As an ancient evil seeps into the Kingdom, Jawad and Alara face undead creatures, power-hungry nobles, and sorceresses from ancient Orders who have come to the Kingdom seeking a powerful artefact. But first, Jawad and Alara have to overcome their differences.

And Jawad must embrace his legacy, which he fears and despises, and become what he had never imagined being--a Blood Mage.
