Faithfully nursing her ill father for five years has derailed Marion Warren’s plans for further education. When no will is found after their father’s death, her brother Tom decides to sell their family home in the city and move his young family to a Vermont farm. Naturally, Marion will always have a home with them—where she can help with housework and the children’s schooling.

Marion’s dream of taking classes and enjoying the city’s cultural offerings evaporates until, armed with only her faith, a meager purse and a quaking heart, she dares to make other plans. A job and a room in a shabby boarding house meet her basic needs; to feed her soul, she scrapes together funds for a season ticket in the upper balcony of the symphony concert hall.

A single perfect crimson rose lays on her seat at the first concert. A mistake surely, but since no one claims it she takes it home. Another rose appears the next week and the next. Who is the kindly benefactor who has brought such beauty into her lonely life?

I love the purity and gentleness of this novel. Grace Livenston Hill is a stand out writer of her time and this text is no exception.

Beautiful novel

This is a romantic story of a sincere, humble, and selfless young woman. Her beloved father dies, and the family does everything possible to strip her of her intended (significant) inheritance. Even though her brother is generally good-hearted, they ruthlessly succeed!

Her response is to steadily go the way of self-sacrifice, even to fulfill the desires God has placed in her heart. She is further humiliated in public settings, even as the plan the Lord has for her unfolds as beautifully as a crimson rose.

This is a book I keep going back to.

There is Great Reward for Faithfulness

This is a sweet story, if a little dated, of a girl who faces hardship and adversity and rises above it, forgiving freely, and eventually reaping what she has sown. Originally published in 1928, there are quaint turns of phrasing, and antiquated views of women, but at the heart of the story is a young woman who is determined to make her way because it is what her father wanted, despite opposition. Her simple, yet sweet spirit is noticed by all whom she encounters, and she catches the eye of a young man who begins wooing her while she is yet unaware of him.

A Sweet Story

Do not know how this special author is able to come up with such different story subjects. Each one is very different and holds the story right on to the very end. Will not tell it here to spoil for the next reader. Just that you will not be disappointed.
Now i am off to choose my next one Narrated by Anne Hancock.
