Ida B. Wells is an American icon of truth telling. Born to slaves, she was a pioneer of investigative journalism, a crusader against lynching, and a tireless advocate for suffrage, both for women and for African Americans. She cofounded the NAACP, started the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, and was a leader in the early civil rights movement, working alongside W. E. B. Du Bois, Madam C. J. Walker, Mary Church Terrell, Frederick Douglass, and Susan B. Anthony.

This engaging memoir, originally published 1970, relates Wells’ private life as a mother as well as her public activities as a teacher, lecturer, and journalist in her fight for equality and justice. This updated edition includes a new foreword by Eve L. Ewing and a new afterword by Ida B. Wells’ great-granddaughter, Michelle Duster.

The Immense Struggle! So much respect!

This was an endeavor. The writing was informative and factual. I could feel Ida’s personality through her entries in her diary. The abrupt ending, make me respect her work, right up until the end. It wasn’t easy to listen to the brutal history of lynching, but I am so respectful of Ida’s work and it gave me a much better understanding of the struggles of black peoples in our racially divided country. We need more Ida B Wells today. Thank you to her family for making this work available to all of us.

The parallels of the eras

Throughout history, we can draw parallels between past eras and the present, showcasing how humans have consistently adapted to challenges. This book highlights a pioneer in the fight against racial segregation, Ida B. Wells, who risked her life for the cause. Her courage and determination are an inspiration to Black journalists today, who continue to fight for justice and equality. Ida B. Wells' strength was likely fueled by her ancestors, just as many of us find the octane needed as we continue this fight.

Loved the history!!! I must listen again on her journey through her victories and struggle for the benefit of our people.

This should be a Mandatory Read

This was an amazing autobiography. I listen to this autobiography as Audible book, and the performance was outstanding. The life of Ida B Wells was one of self sacrifice for the greater good of the African-American nation. It’s amazing to this day. It was not that long ago and we are still fighting the struggle of racism in America. Her ability to outline the difficulties of not only getting justice for the African-American, but to get engagement from African-Americans still persist today.

Very well read period autobiography.

Eye opening, detailed on the work and dedication IBW committed to our American future. She never seemed to lose hope in her mission. If you want details on why's and then what's of the rave struggle, you will want to continue to more sources. worth the read. Worth the listen.
