After an accident in Iraq claims the life of his best friend, National Guardsman Gage Manning returns home to his wife more committed than ever to proving himself both a protector and provider. Being reunited with her eases his pain. The chemistry is strong as ever and Poppy welcomes her husband with open arms and happily reaffirms her submission to his leadership.

But despite her relief at Gage’s homecoming, Poppy finds herself concerned by how stoic her husband has become given what he’s been through. And Gage must face some changes, too. Poppy has become more self-sufficient while he was away. In addition to temporarily going back to a vet tech job she loved, his young wife has become skilled in doing many things she used to depend on Gage to do for her.

Gage wants things to be as they were before he left, but when it’s apparent that Poppy’s new skills may be necessary to the couple’s financial survival, the memories of what happened in the war zone collide with the internal battle with insecurities he’s been hiding from the woman he loves. Gage only wants to be strong for his wife. Will she be able to let him know that the strength she needs is in facing what happened once and for all?
