The story idea was good and I wanted to like it more but the scene development was inconsistent with some parts well developed and then jumping to quick resolution or scene change that lost the momentum. I was also distracted by some of the voices used by the narrator. His main character voice was spot on but the some of the tertiary characters had exaggerated accents that were distracting.

Love a good conspiracy

excellent read! Refreshing to read a clean story! Loved that there were minimal characters and so easy to follow and twists and turned throughout. Very organized in story telling!

Very morally sound book

Darkness Before Dawn by Glenn Miller is a gripping mystery with a well-thought-out plot. The story is the best part: it's sharp, suspenseful, and has just the right amount of complexity to keep you interested without losing the thread. The main character, a seasoned journalist is caught up in a terrifying conspiracy The stakes get higher with each chapter. Miller gets the pacing just right, and the emotional through-line, especially the desperate hope of a parent whose child is missing, makes the action feel real.
Sadly, the audiobook's narration makes the writing less powerful.
When the narrator speaks for different characters, it's clear that he is having a difficult time. These efforts don't add depth; instead, they often sound forced or awkward, which breaks the immersion. The way the dialogue is delivered is even more distracting: it's stiff and unnatural. People don't talk like that, and it makes the conversations sound robotic and jarring, like reading a script instead of hearing a story unfold.
It's frustrating when a great story is ruined by a bad performance that doesn't bring it to life.
The story is worth hearing if you like complicated plots and high-stakes investigations, but you might be better off reading the print or ebook version instead of the audio.

Great Story, Poor Narrator

This book starts off on what seems to be a standard "cold case" or "whodunit" kind of plot, but quickly reaveals there is a much larger force at play. The author obviously spent time researching geography and has an intimate knowledge of spy tactics that make me wonder if any of his knowledge is first-hand. The characters take a moment to grow on you but you quickly find yourself invested. While the full plot takes time being built/revealed, there are multiple thrills to keep your attention. It is the last couple of chapters though that really keep you rivited. The reader (performance) has a smooth melodic cadence that makes for easy listening and does well with the various voices. Overall I would highly reccomend and look forward to the next adventure.

Bigger twist that anticipated

I was hooked right from the beginning and found lots of excuses to go on errands as I listen while driving. Lots of unexpected twists and turns and it ended quite different than I had anticipated.

In book form it would be a page turner!
