Sarah McCoy, die Besitzerin eines kleinen Bonbonladens in Newton, erscheint an einem Sonntag mit einem großen Verband auf dem Kopf zum Gottesdienst. Pater Brown, dem dies natürlich auffällt, erfährt von ihr, dass sie am Abend zuvor wohl auf der Kellertreppe ausgerutscht sei, als sie nach Ladenschluss den Müll hinausgebracht habe. Da sie durch den Sturz an einer retrograden Amnesie leidet, kann sie sich nicht mehr an den Unfallhergang erinnern. Dennoch hat Sarah McCoy das Gefühl, dass da noch mehr gewesen wäre. Pater Brown verspricht der Bonbonverkäuferin zu helfen und gerät dabei in einen Fall voller Rätsel und Widersprüche.
