Forced to abandon their territories by an ancient evil, the wounded and dying packs reconvene on the Lost Mountain to decide what to do next. Despite their differing opinions, it is clear to all that something must be done soon, lest they are destroyed. Beneath this looming threat of further destruction, Duchess is finally able to confront the horrors of what’s been done to her. She is haunted by strange shadows in her mind which seem to offer glimpses of a terrible truth that could be just as much of a lie as everything else. Even her own perception is suspect, and she finds herself isolated from the few dogs who she thought she could trust. All the while, the very same being that brought ruin to the world of dogs continues to work in secret, the specifics of its plan unknown to anyone but it.

Through all the grief and chaos, only one fact seems clear: Answers, and perhaps even salvation, lie beyond the Spires.
