In Egypt, all things are possible. So discovers Albion Stanley, a recent Cambridge graduate and brilliant linguist, newly arrived in Cairo in 1902. Albion sees the unseen, including ghosts. It is a less than comfortable reality, which he tends to with copious amounts of whiskey and numerous other vices.

Also in Cairo is Aleister Crowley, the famed occultist. Aleister is a dangerous man, but not an unsympathetic one and never a dull one. Together, they discover the world of dead Egyptians, some of whom are older than the pyramids.

Dead Egyptians have a lot to say. They are deeply unsatisfied with the state of modern Egypt, yet, for all their wisdom and power, they have limitations. As a Seer, Albion proves indispensable to both Crowley and the dead Egyptians.

Dead Egyptians transports the listener into a glittering turn of the century Cairo, while also addressing the atrocities of colonialism. It is hedonistic, while also exploring the complex world of Ancient Egyptian religious thought. It is historically accurate down to the fabrics, while remaining fantastical at its core.

I read the book first; the narrator definitely understood the assignment and inhabits Albion Stanley (or the other way around).

Great pacing, gives weight to every moment. He nails all of the accents, but the pacing is the true gift.

Clearly had fun with it. Particularly when doing Aleister Crowley’s lines. Nick Johnson is definitely a scene chewer. Can’t wait to see what he does with subsequent books in the series.

The narrator was born for this project. The book is an incredible story of Ancient and modern Egypt. Needs to be a show.

I listened to this on Audible and must say the narrator was born for this book -- his tone and reading fit the text perfectly. The writing is simply gorgeous -- brilliantly brings to life Egypt at the start of the twentieth century. And the author's imagination is breathtaking -- she has imagined a magical world that is so fully developed and populated by a variety of spirits and ghosts that it truly feels real. She got me to suspend my disbelief and I normally am pretty difficult on that score. The book is a story of both intrigue and romance/relationships that surprises at every bend. An easy 5 stars on both story and narration.

Wonderful book, wonderful narration

They say a good book is one when you finish you feel like you have lost a friend. Dead Egyptians by Del Blackwater gave me exactly that feeling. Memorable characters, particularly the protagonist Albion and the ever-hauntingly charismatic Imhotep. Original, insightful, and delightful dialogue that makes you listen to forever. I also learned much about Egypt, making me fall in love with the ancient world. The themes of reincarnation, colonialism, and ancient Egyptian religions were edifying. Great world-building with cinematic visuals that capture and transcend one’s imagination into its psychological depth and metaphysical intrigue. And finally, the narrator has done a splendid job voicing the characters and bringing dialogue to life. Highly recommended.

Splendid!

The story is for adults/mature people, it has sex! Egypt is such a great place to have a story take place. I enjoyed the author’s use of Egyptian history and mythology (for lack of a better term). The places and people are based in reality, which I feel adds to the intrigue. The storyline was engaging and keeps you reading to the end.
The Audible book narrated by Nick Johnson was very well done.
