Sir Manuel Camargue, yesterday one of the most celebrated musicians of his time, today floats face down in the lake near his sprawling English country house. The consensus is accidental death -- but Inspector Wexford knows the stench of murder most foul when he smells it. Particularly in the company of two suspects - one, the victim's fiancee, who is too young to be true, the other his daughter who may be no kin and even less kind.

Good character development. Very descriptive imagery. Worldly exposure. Captivating narrative.
I enjoyed the storyline with the twists and premonitions. However, I was disappointed, and that the story did not provide enough information for me to try to solve the mystery. The mystery was solved by discussion among the characters. That was disappointing!

Intriguing story line

Compelling puzzle that transports Wexford from Kingsmarkham to California and France in a herculean effort to solve the case of an imposter heiress. Rendell does her usual fabulous job of bringing the peculiarities of place to readers, while featuring true-to-life, yet often eccentric characters. Loved it.

One of Rendell's best

I found the plot intriguing - and the changes of location colorful fun. I am a fan of the Wexford series and enjoy reading about his wife and daughters. The denouement of this mystery felt a little flat, perhaps because the story had a brilliant earlier twist.

A challenging plot

Challenging narrative spanning the Euro-American misadventures the best and the worst of us. Take notes as you read.
