Max Moran, a failed actor and manager of the Fireside Inn on the New Jersey shore, finds a murdered man in one of his rooms. The victim turns out to be Dmitri Novikov, who is directing Max in a community theater production of Surprise! You're Dead. Police chief Philpot, who strongly dislikes Max, is trying to find evidence to charge him with the murder, causing Max to feel that he must solve the case himself to avoid arrest. When a second murder happens in the sleepy town of Lighthouse Point, Max believes that the two murders may be connected, and to find out who caused the death of the director, he must also solve the other case as well.
