Nevada Barr's award-winning mystery series captivates fans with vividly drawn wilderness settings and the resourceful sleuth, middle-aged park ranger Anna Pigeon. Deep South portrays Anna boldly confronting hostile teenagers, suspicious locals, and a resentful "old-boy" network as she struggles to solve a gruesome murder. Anna leaves behind her beloved Mesa Verde to take on a position as district park ranger of the Mississippi Natchez Trace Parkway. Once there she faces an angry staff that refuses to work with a woman supervisor. But she pushes that difficulty aside when she stumbles over the body of a teenage girl, shrouded in a hood reminiscent of the KKK. As Anna searches for the truth amidst lies and evasions, she discovers the overgrown woods, thick with kudzu, hold dark secrets that can only lead to violence. Nevada Barr draws on her own experience as a ranger on the Natchez Trace Parkway to create believable situations. Barbara Rosenblat transports you to the Mississippi countryside to feel the sultry heat and smell the heady scents.©2000 Nevada Barr (P)2000 Recorded Books Women Sleuths Thriller & Suspense Mystery Suspense Historical Fiction World Literature

Critic reviews

"Barr produces another suspenseful and highly atmospheric mystery, illuminated even in this new setting by her trademark lyricism in writing about the natural world." (Publishers Weekly)
"Barr paints a luminous picture of the geography and the people of the Natchez Trace. Anna is a delight." (Library Journal)
"Narrator Barbara Rosenblat turns in the virtuoso performance that listeners have come to expect. She distinctly renders the Deep South accents of whites and blacks; men and women; old, middle-aged, and juveniles." (AudioFile)
"The novel offers the same strengths as its predecessors: vivid prose, a surprising plot, and a cast of sympathetic, well-rounded characters, both series regulars and a new crew of rangers and locals. There are some new pleasures as well: Barr effectively captures the beauty and menace of nature below the Mason Dixon Line and provides thoughtful insights into teens, race, and the Civil War." I am not finished with this book yet. I love the story and I must finish it to see what happens. My hesitation is with the narrator. She seems out of breath constantly, has a very loud swallow/re-wetting of lips and super deep breaths after every few sentences. I can’t explain it but it’s driving me crazy! I listen to 3-5 books a month or more and have never heard anyone do this so much.

Good book, Painful listening to Narrator

LOTS of action. Great interaction between characters. New insights to an area of the USI’ve not been to. Fast pace.

Because of the reviews I wasn’t sure what to expect but the book was quite good. Narration wasn’t bad. Yes I would recommend.

Good

I like these stories. I enjoy the varied national parks. It does seem a bit impossible that one person could have so many injuries.

I am not reading in chronological order. But they stand alone fine.

Good stories with women heroine

I always enjoy a good mystery. This was good but it seemed a bit on the . . . .
Well, I am not sexist but I think women would more identify with this novel. It really was enjoyable from a male perspective but I know my wife will enjoy it more.

Basically a good read
