Georges Lorant, der Polizeipräfekt von Paris, will weiterhin alles daransetzen, Arsène Lupin hinter Schloss und Riegel zu bringen. Dieser hat inzwischen den Auftrag erhalten, das Bild „Die Trauerweide" von Monsieur Chalot zu stehlen. Doch vor dessen Haus erfährt er, dass Monsieur Chalot vor kurzem gestorben ist und sein Haus bereits von dem zwielichtigen Gebrauchtwarenhändler Monsieur Andronicus entrümpelt wurde.
