Lacey Laurel also delivered a solid performance overall, though her Russian accent consistently sounded more Spanish than Russian throughout the book. Unfortunately, it never fully settled into something believable. That said, Laurel is fantastic in the Keta Kendric Twisted Minds series, where her natural Spanish accent actually enhances the characters and atmosphere instead of feeling out of place.
The author continues to prove that she has a real talent for creating compelling storylines and memorable characters. One of her greatest strengths is building worlds that readers want to revisit. However, the continuity between connected series and spin-offs could be stronger.
In this book, the author introduces Hiro, Kenji, and Hiro’s Executioners. Later, in the Tokyo Empire series, these same characters return, but their relationships and dynamics are dramatically different. In this story, Hiro and Kenji are brothers who genuinely hate each other, while in the Tokyo Empire series they are portrayed as loving, loyal brothers with a close bond. Even the Executioners are renamed the Fangs. So far, the Tokyo Empire series has not offered an explanation for these changes, which can feel confusing for longtime readers invested in the larger universe.
Even with those continuity issues, the author still succeeds at what she does best: creating entertaining plots, intense character dynamics, and stories that keep readers emotionally invested.
