Every legend of the strange and unusual contains a kernel of truth, and occasionally, the kernel is stranger than the legend. Fourteen miles south of Mildenhall, a town in Suffolk, England, lies the town of Bury Saint Edmunds, where famous witch trials took place in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, which, of course, being strange and unusual, became the stuff of legends.
Charlie Lindbergh was a U.S. Navy pilot waiting out his final week in the Navy at the RAF Mildenhall airbase. Free of obligations and finally free to travel anywhere he fancied, he promised himself a trek through Europe and Africa with whatever adventure serendipity chose to offer. Little did he know that legend and serendipity were already at work right there in Mildenhall, England.
While waiting out his final week in the Navy, Charlie met Monique Walpole at the open-air Mildenhall Friday market and was captivated by her exotic appearance. Charmed and bewitched, he immediately determined to discover all he could about her. But discovering Monique quickly was impossible and soon became an improbable adventure he hadn’t anticipated and couldn’t have imagined.
