Walt Disney didn’t just create a cartoon. He created a civilization. From a bankrupt animator with a dream to a company that reshaped global culture, this is the true story of how one man — and one mouse — built an empire of characters, parks, movies, songs, and stories that still dominate the world today. This isn’t a takedown. It’s not a puff piece. It’s a biography of an empire — calm, clear, and unblinking. Disney isn’t just a company. It’s a myth that owns myths. This is how it happened.

I never thought a simple documentary could draw me in and leave me wanting more, but it did. James Johnson delivers 100 years of Disney history in a neat little less-than-one-hour package, and he does it in a way that is fascinating and gripping. I frequently found myself eager to find out what happens in the next chapter.

My only complaint is that at times it felt too rushed, and I wished he had spent a little more time exploring some of the interesting points in Disney’s history. For example, what do you mean Donald Duck once had a dream he was forced to live in Nazi Germany, AND it won an Oscar for best animated short!? Are you really going to just drop that little tidbit and then move on without saying more? (I had to pause the book and go look up the video. I recommend you do the same.)

Mindy Bollinger does a fantastic job at narrating. Her voice is vibrant and expressive- a far cry from the dull monotone that seems common in documentaries. Her performance draws you into the story, and breathes even more life-and magic- into the already compelling documentary.

Overall, a great all-around listen. Well worth checking out!
