Sometimes a girl’s gotta flex her quills and lay down the law…

Katie Carmichael may not be a scary badass dragon capable of toasting her enemies to a crisp, but that doesn’t mean she’s a pushover. And sure, the roaring, fire-breathing hottie is, uh, hot, but she’s a chick with a plan. A plan that includes a secluded old farmhouse and doesn’t include a tall, heavily muscled, and totally delicious weredragon.

Joey Kenton, new owner of said old farmhouse, has plans of his own. They revolve around one, curvy, spitfire werehedgehog and whether their children will be hoglets or dragonlets—Joey would be happy with either. Until Katie’s life is threatened and he realizes that her life is more important than his love for her.

Of course, Katie realizes Joey is an idiot and when she revises her plans…

Love the author. not really please with the narrator. personal preference like a male reading mail part and female reading female parts. again just personal preference.

Great short story.

Who’d have thunk I’d like hedgehogs over dragons? I much preferred this author duo’s Hedging Her Bets, which featured curvy human Honey and werehedgehog Blake. Even though both that novella and this one had too much curvy girl insecurity, Hedging Her Bets had a lot more humor- and no dragons.

And boy, did the dragon part of this novella fizzle my sizzle. The dragon part shares the same world as the novella Hunted by the Dragon Duke, which had off-putting, probably unintended, racism of creating a dragon shifter society that pairs white female dragons with black male dragons. The dragon culture also has dated caveman possessiveness of the male dragons, that could have been funny, but just felt toxic.

Here, not only does he start off as a controlling, steam-rolling jerk, but after he calls her his mate, and after an on-the-gross-end naughty scene (“sex lips” and “wet squelch” and “musk” in short order … urp), he ghosts her! He’s a legendary black dragon and yet surrenders at the first sign of trouble.
How am I supposed to root for a man like that?

Wishy washy dragon and insecure hedgehog
