Disgraced and disfigured by the giant serpents, the King spends his days watching gladiators fight to the death in the Collesium. After receiving troubling news of more dragon attacks, the King makes a drunken proclamation. Any gladiator that survives tomorrow's challenge shall win their freedom and will be promoted to lead his dragon-slaying division. Avalon, a street-smart girl that trusts no one, sees this as her chance to escape the arena and leave the gladiator life behind her. After a bloody battle that nearly kills her, Avalon embarks on a journey that will change her life forever. The decisions she makes will affect the lives of every man, woman, and child in the kingdom.

During this high fantasy adventure, Avalon will encounter dragons, wizards, knights, pirates, bandits, dragon guards, and much, much more!

The story is great and I’m a big fan of intelligent main characters. Overall it does a lot of things right. It is however, very short, to a point where it feels like sample chapters from a much larger book. I wouldn’t take off points for it but I hope that future installments will have a bit more to them. Also, the narrator does an excellent job that really kept me going.

A bit rushed

I found this story to be a well written and fun first arc of a story. It has good combat and the PoV characters have all had interesting personalities. From the drunk king to the thief turned slave gladiator. That being said I didn't expect more than that since it's only two hours long. I'm looking forward to more in the series

Fun but rather short

I received a code for this book via Audioboom. Finally! A fantasy story featuring a female heroine that is neither a “Mary Sue” or a character written solely for sex appeal! In addition to a well written lead character, the story clearly paints the world the book takes place in. At several points in the story I had to check behind me to make sure I was still in the real world! A word of warning: the story does describe the characters’ wounds in detail so if blood makes you squeamish this may be one to skip. Additionally, one of the characters could be perceived to have homophobic views of marriage (it’s only mentioned briefly) so if that’s a trigger for you, you may want to skip this book as well.

I received a code for this audiobook and decided to give it a chance.

The narrator did a good job with the voices for each character, giving them their own unique feel and personality. Character emotions, be it fear, joy, despondency, etc., were well presented. He might want to tone down his voice for the third person narration, but it did make it seem as if the narrator was presenting a great epic to the masses.

The story itself is pretty good and shows good potential. It left me wanting to learn more about the setting and history, which isn't necessarily bad. However, some of this information should have been presented to the reader/listener in this story. Hopefully the things that were glossed over in this story, [the deaths of the prior Kings, dragons and the war with them, slavery and the Colosseum], are well explained in later books.

I say give it a chance. However, I highly recommend not reading the Publisher’s Summary, as it made me want to roll my eyes out of my skull and whip them at whomever wrote that ridiculous and misleading drivel.

A Promising Start
