Why whisper?

This somewhat annoying story of the meaning of life and death suffers from the protagonist asking questions and not getting answers. That may be the point, but after a while you would think he would wise up that he's always going to get the runaround. And what I found more annoying was his use of a half-whispering voice no matter what the circumstance. Well, maybe he is dreaming the whole thing. I found it tiresome.
