HE PLANNED TO OBLITERATE AN ENTIRE CITY. HE THOUGHT NO ONE COULD STAND IN HIS WAY. BUT HE HADN'T HEARD OF RIYRIA.

When a master-craftsmen dwarf is fired, he threatens retaliation. The rogues-for-hire known as Riyria are commissioned to find and stop him. Traveling to the paradise resort of Tur Del Fur, the two are granted a lavish allowance that, along with the easy job, promises to turn the trip into a vacation.

Everything would have been perfect except that the disgruntled employee’s last name is Berling and the target of his wrath is the legendary towers of Drumindor.

It's been more than five years since the last adventure with Royce Melborn (a cynical ex-assassin) and Hadrian Blackwater (an idealistic ex-mercenary), a pair whose bonds of friendship are bound with blood. This is the 20th novel based in the world of Elan and the fifth in the Riyria Chronicle series.

I have followed Riyria from the beginning and always enjoy the narration of Tim Gerard Reynolds. I appreciate that this story was trying to give us a deeper look into the relationships of the main characters. The storyline is problematic, however, and some of the relevance of events don't necessarily make much sense.

This book is a prequel to other books, and that is fine, but there still needs to be some clearly connectivity.

Less than expected

I have read all the Royce & Hadrian adventures and this is the weakest book yet. Too much time was spent on Royces feelings for Gwen and there was too much time spent on stuff that did not directly affect the plot.

The Weakest Royce & Hadrian Adventure

With all the hype from previous books about what happened in Drumendor, I was expecting more action and peril. Most of that was shoved to the end. From the end note, it seems like, perhaps, what could have been was toned down based on what other fans were writing and wanting. The book was about 90% leisure and lore and about 10% action and peril. I would have preferred 50-50 or 60-40 based on the hype, but it was still good overall.

Enjoyable but less than hoped for
