Emily had been retrieved from orphanage life for the exclusive position of companion to Sir Peregrine's hound, Duke. Upon the gentleman's death, Emily and Duke inherited a fortune in diamonds. But Duke soon fell prey to greedy relatives, and Emily had to protect herself from Lord Storm, who had declared Emily's pedigree quite unsuitable, while at the same time threatening to steal her heart.

Marion Chesney spins a delightful Regency romance, complete with her trademark wit.

Rated PG regency romance. I wish these were a bit more spicy. Good, and entertaining.

Fun adventures

I feel I can confidently state I have read/ listened to every Chesney/Beaton book and this one could have been so good!! it had an animal, diamonds, angry and vengeful relatives, mean old ladies, nice servants but it crashed and burned because the main character was a spineless extremely dumb and very boring young lady. give her the benefit of the doubt and say it was her age but she inherited an entire estate and doesn't manage to do or think one interesting thing. add the inevitable extremely unlikely "romance" and, ugh. oh well.

please no more dumb heroines!!

Any additional comments?

This has turned out to be one of my top favorite regency romances by Marion Chesney ( M.C. Beaton). She has assembled a cast of characters one can care about — Emily, Lord Storm, Duke, Jimmy, and some of the minor players also such as the butler and the housekeeper. The story has its share of mean and greedy characters all of whom pick on a defenseless young woman and a mongrel dog. Their spiteful actions ironically help along the sweet romance between Emily and Lord Storm. A little gem.

Charming love story!

Marion Chesney is always an easy, light-fare read. It may have been my imagination in this one, but Emily sometimes went from practical to dense with a few other minor inconsistencies in personality. I generally enjoy this narrator, but she occasionally changed Emily's voice by turning it to a high nasally like one of the other characters.

This storyline was a little different, with a dog inheriting jewels and all. But it was a pleasant, easy listen. Narration by Lindy Nettleton was good.

Unusual Plot with the usual Chesney twists & turns
