Michelle Mays was born into an abusive family in the Midwest. As she and her siblings cling to survival, the balance of family ties is weighed against alcoholism, drug abuse, abandonment, and despair. Hope dawns in the form of foster care, only to be deferred by multiple placements and a system not equipped to support the children it's meant to protect.

Through powerful vignettes of a life disjointed, Mays's story is a journey of hope that is echoed in the experiences of thousands of children in the court and foster care systems today.

Dumpster Doll is brave not because it is unique, but because it unflinchingly shines a light on family turmoil, flaws in judicial systems, and ultimately, the grit and tenacity that thousands of children exhibit each day just to make it through.

This was probably the worst narration I have heard in the almost 500 books I have listened to on audible. It’s a good investment to make. The story was captivating enough for me to buy the next in the series.

Should have hired a narrator

I felt the emotion at times and an overwhelming enthusiasm at others. I couldn't stop listening. To the Michelles: Bring on the next!

I’ve known you and Scott for nearly decade and never knew any of this until you published. From the moment I met you both, I knew, just knew that you were both the most beautiful of souls. The longer I’ve known you and now that I’ve finally had the courage to listen to the first part of your story, I love you and Scott all the more. I am honored and privileged to call you friend and eagerly await another opportunity to support you and Foster Hub.

… and for anyone whose read this far, you should have a listen because Michelle demonstrates brilliantly that the cycles of neglect and abuse can be broken.

A Buddhist might say, “No Mud No Lotus”. Michelle was dragged through the mud and has come up the most beautiful lotus.
