Johnny’s search gets a boost when a sex worker calls to say she's had dealings with Lester, and yes, he does live in Grove. But the informant turns up dead the next morning. And that isn't the only murder in Grove. On the same morning, the body of a male, head and hands removed, turns up on a new hiking trail. Ordered by her superiors not to go into the station during her leave, Johnny must navigate the cases through her troopers who are investigating during her absence.

But then the investigations turn up a shocking connection between the two murders. Johnny and her troopers discover that a few people in her town are not who they claim to be, and one of them has spent years sacrificing everything for a reason no one understood.
