In a war-torn galaxy, the Imperium of Xerxes and the Kingdom of Athena have battled for decades in an endless stalemate. Salvage captain Anya Petrova scrapes by on the fringes, haunted by her parents' death in Trade Guild mines and desperate to break free from crushing debt.
When Anya's ship detects an energy anomaly, she discovers a derelict Xerxian warship containing a dying AI with a terrifying secret: an ancient parasitic entity called the Connection has been manipulating both empires from the shadows. Emperor Vorlag's immortality comes from the Connection, while Queen Victoria secretly plans to harness its power for herself. The AI, having escaped Xerxian labs, carries crucial data about the parasite's true nature and its plan to consume all organic life.
As Xerxian forces close in to retrieve their lost AI, Anya must navigate a galaxy where no one can be trusted. The Trade Guild wants to sell her discovery to the highest bidder, Athena's forces seek to capture the technology, and Xerxian agents will kill anyone who learns their empire's secret. With her cyborg companion Jax and the fragmented AI as unlikely allies, Anya races to decode the entity's weaknesses before it completes its galactic infection.
The climax forces Anya to choose between exposing the truth—which would shatter both empires and plunge the galaxy into chaos—or allowing the comfortable lie to continue while the Connection slowly devours everything she's ever known.
