Egyptian gods have always held my fascination, from their usage in programs like Stargate to the similarities to other cultures' gods. There is just so much to find out about the temperamental, fickle, yet sometimes benevolent gods of Egypt. Inside this guide, I take a look at the gods that shaped one of the greatest nations on earth.

Egyptian Mythology is a topline overview of the Egyptian pantheon for those that only have a rudimentary understanding of the religion. The volume is a very quick read and doesn't get into too much depth but it does a good job providing a 'survey' knowledge of most of the major gods of Egypt. Overall, this is a quick read that gives you most of the relevant facts if you haven't really engaged in this history before.

The volume also does a good job connecting some stories and providing context as to how the gods were worshipped. The story of Isis and Osiris is a core foundation of the Egyptian faith and i had never heard it before. That Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys were siblings had never really occurred to me. I had always thought of Osiris as the god of the Underworld, but nothing more than that. I did not realize they were all related as children of Amun, Gep, and Nut and that there was a great rivalry between Set and Osiris. I also appreciated how the authors pointed out all the pop culture connections to the Egyptian gods in various forms of entertainment. Egyptian myths and characters still influence us greatly even today.

The audio performance was clear and articulate and overall outstanding.

In 2010 I scheduled a tour of Egypt for 2011. I read various books on Egypt in preparation for this tour. I think this book would have been s good addition to my readings. This book presents the family trees for the major gods. Periodic repetitions of their relationships and attributes in various chapters help to reinforce their place in their family trees. It describes their attributes very well. And, mention of their appearances in modern movies, stories and games is an added benefit to help remember what they were about in Egyptian Mythology. I recommend this book if you are interrsted in Egypt.

Recommended for people interested in Egyptian gods.

If you like Egyptian Mythology, you will love this book! It covers all the major Gods of the Egyptian mythos and it is an easy read/listen. It is very much a survey of the gods, rather than a deep in depth look at everything, but I really liked that. It gave me everything I wanted to know, and a bit more, and it was easily digested. Some mythology books can be so boring and dull and this is definitely NOT one of those. I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys history and/or just wants to brush up on their Egyptian mythology knowledge.
