Critic reviews

“Imagine your favorite Law & Order cast solving fresh mysteries into infinity, with no re-runs, and you have some sense of McBain’s grand, ongoing accomplishment.” ( Entertainment Weekly)
“McBain has the ability to make every character believable - which few writers these days can do.” ( Associated Press)

Some stories stand the test of time. This one doesn’t, in my opinion. As a police procedural, it’s too simplistic. As a character driven story, it lacks appeal. I know McBain books were best sellers back in the day, but I just didn’t care very much for this one. The reader, with his wise-guy accent, didn’t engage me either. I did think the basic plot of both the main and secondary stories were pretty good, and there were a couple of good twists. These were not enough to inspire me to give an overall rating of more than three stars.
