La narración hecha por la autora es emocionante y revela de viva voz la historia de los Marielitos, pero en carne propia. Muy recomendable

Excellent-Brought me to tears!!!

This book truely gave me a better understanding of what type of people Cubans are and what the Cubans have and still are going thru in Cuba. I came to the USA when I was 6 in 1972 and even though my parents told me of the struggles I didn't quite get it...until now. A must read for all, especially Cuban-Americans.

Excelente novela del éxodo del Mariel en Cuba de los 80

Novela narrada por la autora del libro que cuenta la experiencia propia vivida por ella en su juventud cuando, producto del ingreso de un bus a la embajada de Perú en La Habana, se produjo un conflicto diplomático entre Perú y Cuba, ya que el gobierno peruano se negó a entregar a los asilados. En este conflicto se vio envuelto luego EEUU, quien autorizó, con aquiescencia de Fidel Castro, que cubanos residentes en EEUU pudieran ir a buscar en naves mercantes a sus familiares. Lo que Jimmy Cárter no previó fue el aprovechamiento de Fidel Castro, quien autorizó el zarpe de las naves en la medida que también se llevarán a otras personas especialmente seleccionadas, a los que el régimen llamaba los indeseables, como reclusos, homosexuales y toda persona que significará una carga. Producto de ese éxodo llegaron a Miami cerca de 126.000 cubanos, produciéndose una oleada de problemas en Miami en particular que llevó incluso a Jimmy Carter a perder la reelección. Novela muy documentada, muy bien escrita y que emociona porque proviene de la mano de una persona que vivió en carne propia los acontecimientos del puente marítimo del puerto del Mariel.

Riveting, truthful,

Being Cuban, listening to this book reinforced what I already knew of the plight of Cubans after Castro’s takeover in 1959.
The author being also the narrator gave the story the emotion and feeling that many Cubans, including my family, felt as they left a country uncertain of ever seeing it again. I only wish this book would have also been done as an audio book in English, I know many people who would want to hear the plight of the Cuban people. Listening to stories such as this one really brings their suffering and desire for freedom to light, especially with the current events happening on the island nation where freedom is still not at the reach of its people. Thank you Mirta Ojito for sharing your family’s experience in such a raw and authentic manner. Great listen!
