Mientras pinta a la bella Tessie, el pintor contempla al trabajador de un cementerio que está enfrente de su estudio. Scott empieza a sentir como si, por solo mirarle, estuviera influenciando su pintura, que en vez de reflejar una sonrosada y lozana Tessie, empieza a mostrarla con la piel pálida y enfermiza.
