While running away from home for reasons that are eminently defensible, Emilie’s plans to stow away on the steamship Merry Bell and reach her cousin in the big city go awry, landing her on the wrong ship and at the beginning of a fantastic adventure.

Taken under the protection of Lady Marlende, Emilie learns that the crew hopes to use the aether currents and an experimental engine, and with the assistance of Lord Engal, journey to the interior of the planet in search of Marlende’s missing father.

With the ship damaged on arrival, they attempt to traverse the strange lands on their quest. But when evidence points to sabotage and they encounter the treacherous Lord Ivers, along with the strange race of the sea-lands, Emilie has to make some challenging decisions and take daring action if they are ever to reach the surface world again.

I am enjoying the story. But the narrator sounds like she thinks I’m 6 years old. Please, tone it down! PLEASE!

Narrator not right

As has been noted, the barrator wasn’t really right. Reading for a younger audience than what the book was appropriate for.

Story okay; performance no

The reader seemed to make mistakes once a minute with word emphasis - things like ‘great coat’ being read as if it’s an awesome coat instead of a type of coat. One or two is understandable but it kept happening so I gave up.

Had to stop listening bc of reader errors

My prior exposure to the author was limited to her (fabulous) “Murderbot” series for which I had already recommended to my high school daughter. This is perfect for her younger sister. The pacing, the characters, the setting, and the narrator all come together asan ideal roadtrip listen.
I should know because it is exactly what I enjoyed on my drive to and from my ultramarathon mountain race. Dad tested and approved!!!

Looking forward to the next tale in the series

An adventure fit for my Junior High daughter(‘s father - me)

The story is good, but the narrator is not. Breathless and excited by every sentence. Hard to tell the difference between an action sequence and the description of an interior cabin. Apparently chairs and tables are very exciting.

Over excited narrator
