Early on in his life, Matt craved a return to nature. When he became an adult, he set aside his comfortable urban life and lived entirely off the land. In this riveting narrative that brings together epic adventure and spiritual quest, he shows us what extraordinary things the human body is capable of when pushed to its limits. He learns the secrets of the Tarahumara Indians, which help him run the 1,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail in just 58 days and endure temperature swings of 100 degrees. He takes us with him as he treks into the wilderness to live alone for half a year, armed with nothing but a loincloth, a pair of sandals, a stone knife, and chia seeds. He recounts near-death experiences of hiking alone through the snowdrifts at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Above all, Epic Survival is a book about growing closer to the land that nurtures us. No matter how far our modern society takes us from the wilderness, the call remains.

I loved this story and hope Matt makes additional books. It makes one think a lot about how what we give up with modern technology and the modern lifestyle.

Amazing story and a great read

I enjoyed Matt's thought process and his evolution to know himself. His life story motivates me to grow in self awareness by joining my reflection of myself with the land.

A true self awakening story.

What made the experience of listening to Epic Survival the most enjoyable?

The stories. Lots of real-life examples of of Matt's adventures with emphasis on his mistakes and his opportunities for improvement. I was amazed by how little food and water he survived on in some of these treks.

Have you listened to any of Tom Perkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Tom did a great job, but I would have preferred for Matt to narrate this story himself.

Great book

Matt does a great job of explaining what it really takes to live in the wild for periods of time. I knew it was hard, but he made me feel what it was really like. Must listen for anyone looking to make the switch from society to the wild, or just interested in what the wild life is like and how we we an connect to the land.
