Every ghost has a story—and this one has waited over a century to be heard. In the shadows of a once-grand opera house, a forgotten spirit lingers—tethered by sorrow, music, and a love that defied time.

When Christine returns to the historic theater to direct the renovation of the long-forgotten Opera House, she is drawn into a haunting mystery rooted in the 1910 tragedy that closed the doors forever. As past and present collide, Christine begins to unravel the story of a gifted but tormented composer with a face the world could not accept. His music still echoes through the walls, calling to her with a sorrowful beauty that awakens memories not her own.

Drawn into a world of forgotten sorrow, Christine encounters Erik—haunting, enigmatic, and heartbreakingly tragic. But he is not the only spirit bound to the opera house. Beneath its grandeur, something darker stirs; something that does not seek redemption, but vengeance.

With the help of Raoul, her fiancé and gifted architect, and Neil, a skeptical professor turned reluctant believer, Christine is pulled deeper into the secrets of the opera house, where echoes of love, loss, and vengeance refuse to die.

At once a gothic romance, a supernatural mystery, and a masterful reimagining of a classic tale, Erik's Song blends atmospheric suspense with lyrical emotion. Jim Stephens delivers a powerful, poetic narrative filled with unforgettable characters, timeless longing, and a finale that leaves listeners breathless. Fans of The Phantom of the Opera, Rebecca, and The Shadow of the Wind will be captivated by this story of ghosts, music, memory, and redemption.

I was surprised at how much I liked this! it has all the same vibes as The Phantom of the Opera (TPOTO) but is a new take on the story. It still keeps the darkness, but removes the really problematic parts of Erik, for me at least.

Because it has a split timeline, the start can feel a little slow. But that also means you don't need to be familiar with TPOTO before reading this, you get all the context you need as you go.

Such a fun twist!

Erik's Song is an intriguing story offering a unique ghost / time travel / mystery / romance blend that I found quite bewitching. The pacing is engaging. The narration exquisitely lends to the drama, warmth, and tension the author conveys, breathing compelling life into each character, including those who have exited mortality. The excellent matching of voices to characters offers listeners a rare treat. I enjoyed the originally composed and performed music that sometimes weaves into the background and other times takes center stage with stunning soprano and tenor vocals. I was pleased that the tale's resolution moved in a different, more fulfilling direction than I anticipated.

Fascinating story with superb narration and music

I didn’t expect to fall in love with Erik’s Song the way I did. It’s not my usual genre, so I went in without expectations but from the very beginning, it completely drew me in. The writing is beautiful and immersive, and the story unfolds in a way that feels both emotional and genuine.

What really stood out to me was how deeply the characters resonated. I found myself fully invested in their journeys, feeling every high and low right alongside them. There’s something incredibly powerful about a book that can pull you out of your comfort zone genre-wise and still leave such a lasting impression, and this one absolutely did that for me.

Everything - from the pacing to the atmosphere - thoughtfully crafted. It’s the kind of book that stays with you even after you’ve turned the last page. I’m so glad I gave it a chance, because it ended up being one of those rare reads that reminds you why you love books in the first place.

Highly recommend, even (and maybe especially) if it’s not your typical genre! I read the book, but also listened on Audible, the book came alive. The words, the music, Wow. The narrators did a fantastic job too.

Give this book a listen, the author was creative in every way.

Out of my comfort zone and completely worth it

The tone of the vibrant voice actors honestly saved the book for me. There was a crispness to the delivery and the sound quality brought me further in. The story also was very solid but ended up being a bit too much gothic floweriness to the language. Overall, I think if you are someone who loves this genre you will be enthralled.

Very Solid Voices
