In this reasoned exploration of justice, retribution, and redemption, the champion of the new monastic movement, popular speaker, and author of the bestselling The Irresistible Revolution offers a powerful and persuasive appeal for the abolition of the death penalty.

The Bible says an eye for an eye. But is the state’s taking of a life true—or even practical—punishment for convicted prisoners? In this thought-provoking work, Shane Claiborne explores the issue of the death penalty and the contrast between punitive justice and restorative justice, questioning our notions of fairness, revenge, and absolution.

Using an historical lens to frame his argument, Claiborne draws on testimonials and examples from Scripture to show how the death penalty is not the ideal of justice that many believe. Not only is a life lost, so too, is the possibility of mercy and grace. In Executing Grace, he reminds us of the divine power of forgiveness, and evokes the fundamental truth of the Gospel—that no one, even a criminal, is beyond redemption.

Recently someone shared with me that I should visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. After reading this book, I have realized that we have had our own Holocaust. So many innocent lives taken in the American South through lynching. Most did nothing other than be born a different color than those passing judgement. I never knew there were so many ways to execute a person. This book is a real eye opener and isn't for the faint of heart. Nor is it for the person that wishes to always see themselves the same when looking at one's reflection. It was truly mind changing.

The Injustice of the American South

Well researched. Many compelling stories. Would have liked to hear him address cases of repeat murderers after incarceration (murdering while in maximum security).

Powerful Pathos Appeal

Valuable information but now makes me want to hear Shane’s new book on this topic. I wonder if he believes things got better or worse since this writing. I enjoyed the narrators easy southern accent. I felt like I was listening to Shane himself.

Life changing information

Shane writes what may be one of the best books I've read since his own "Jesus for President." He continues in his prophetic role and boldly goes into hot topic territory, bringing both Biblical and historical research as well as story after story to illustrate the importance of life, justice, grace and forgiveness. I rarely feel changed or empowered after reading a book, but Shane somehow pulls it off every time, leaving me with beautiful, holy conviction.

Wonderful and Complete

The information included was helpful, but the narrator's reading sounded affected and contrived. This is important information that needs to be out there.

Great book, not narrator
