He lost his face in a fire. He never lost his faith.

When firefighter Pat Hardison ran into a burning home, he came out alive—but with injuries so severe, he was unrecognizable. Facing the Fire is his raw, unfiltered true story of survival, a record-breaking face transplant, and the God who never left him in the flames.

For the next fourteen years, Pat lived behind skin grafts, pressure masks, and the constant stares of strangers—fighting to be the husband and dad his family needed when every mirror told him to quit.

Then came an unexpected call from New York: a chance at the most extensive face transplant ever attempted. The surgery would be dangerous. The outcome uncertain. But it might be his only shot at more than survival.

Facing the Fire is the plainspoken, unforgettable true story of:

  • A man who refused to let tragedy write the ending
  • The loved ones who walked every mile beside him
  • A groundbreaking medical miracle that made history
  • And the God who never left him—even in the fire

Raw, gripping, and deeply human, Pat takes you inside the real cost of courage—one surgery, one hard decision, one answered prayer at a time.

If you’ve ever wondered where hope comes from when life burns everything down, this book will show you.

when I decided to listen to the story of a firefighter injured in the performance of his duties a certain part of me braced for what each and every person
who chooses this form of service as career, whether part time or full time has to acknowledge in order to be honest with themselves is no one is immune from what life may throw at you , this story touches every string in your physical construct, the extreme highs one gets when the sun is shining the sky is blue and no dark clouds in sight. it also exposes you to what it looks like to slip off a mountain in full free fall with no hope of survival. And yet through all the pain and heartache still keep going just long enough to find peace in it all.

Carolyn Wiley- Thank you for sending me this book recommendation! The narrator couldn’t have been more perfect to read this story, told with grace and honesty. This was a hugely helpful story to help me in my burn care practice, as I treat acutely ICU but don’t get to hear the lengthy stories of reintegration, family struggle and revision. Cheers to you Pat.

Cheers to those we’ve loved and lost and those that are still surviving!
