Why are millions of young Americans turning away from organized religion—yet leaning harder than ever into spirituality?

Faith Unbound delivers the answer through a powerful blend of research, storytelling, cultural analysis, and honest reflection.

In this eye-opening exploration, award-winning author Myles McGuire traces the dramatic rise of the “Spiritual but Not Religious” (SBNR) movement among Millennials and Gen Z. Drawing from history, sociology, and lived experiences, McGuire examines how a generation shaped by economic turmoil, political polarization, digital overload, and institutional distrust is forging its own spiritual identity outside the walls of the church.

Rather than depicting faith as fading, Faith Unbound reveals a transformation—a shift toward personal meaning, moral curiosity, and an inner search for purpose that thrives far beyond traditional pews.

Inside this timely and thought-provoking audiobook, listeners will discover:

  • Why Millennials are leaving religious institutions in record numbers
  • How spirituality is evolving through mindfulness, social justice, and personal exploration
  • The cultural forces redefining belief in modern America
  • The psychological and social benefits of the SBNR identity
  • What religious leaders can learn—and how faith communities can adapt and reconnect
  • How younger generations are reshaping the future of American spirituality

Compassionate, grounded, and richly researched, Faith Unbound is both a mirror and a map—reflecting where we are and illuminating where spiritual life is headed next.

Whether you’re a believer, a seeker, or someone simply curious about the future of faith in our changing world, this audiobook offers clarity, nuance, and hope.

I listened to this during my commute and found myself reflecting on my own spiritual journey. The discussion about younger generations questioning traditional paths felt familiar to conversations I’ve had with friends. It raised honest points without sounding preachy. By the end, I had a lot to think about regarding faith and community.

Not gonna lie, this one really resonated with me coz it blends spiritual guidance with everyday practicality. I love how it shows that faith isn’t just something we talk about on Sundays.. it’s something we can practice daily thru prayer, journaling and mindful reflection. It also talks about navigating doubt and uncertainty, turning those moments into chances to strengthen our faith instead of letting them shake it. It really makes faith feel more alive, personal, and something I can actually apply in everyday life, giving me a sense of confidence and purpose when facing life’s challenges.

I finished this thinking about a few friends who stopped going to church years ago but still talk about purpose, healing, and meaning all the time. I like how this audiobook looks at a real shift happening among many millennials. Many are stepping away from organized religion while still leaning into spirituality. It uses research, stories, and cultural analysis to explain what’s changing and why.

What interested me the most is that it doesn’t treat the topic like a simple “belief vs no belief” debate. It focuses on how people search for belonging, identity, ethics, and comfort, even when they don’t trust institutions. It also pays attention to the emotional side. Disappointment, harm, unanswered questions, and the desire for something more personal all show up in ways that feel honest.

Ben Staab’s narration stays clear and steady, which helps because the book mixes ideas and stories. I found it easy to follow and easy to reflect on.

Overall, I thought it was a good listen for anyone trying to understand the spiritual-but-not-religious trend without stereotyping it. It works well for people of faith, people who have left faith, and people who are just curious about what’s happening in this generation.

Out of curiosity I listened to this book to gain a better picture of just exactly what SBNR is and why it’s having such a big impact on our young people. The author does a thorough job of researching and defining this phenomenon. Each chapter gave me a better understanding and shed light on a subject I was not familiar with. The narration is clearly stated, making it understandable to both young and old. This was an eye-opener for me!
