As a former three-term U.S. Republican senator from Missouri and an ordained Episcopal priest, John C. Danforth has watched the shifts in his party and the Christian church with growing alarm. Now he feels the time has come for a change.

Senator Danforth takes on the wedge issues (abortion, stem-cell research, gay marriage, the Schiavo case, displays of religion in the public square) forcefully and eloquently. He examines and lambastes the Christian Right's relentless hammering of this agenda to mobilize its base.

We must, Danforth insists, move forward together. Leaving divisive party politics behind, he says, we can address our country's problems. At a time when Americans have been disappointed again and again with their leaders' failings, Danforth's message is a much-needed one that will resonate with all concerned citizens.

Critic reviews

"With passion, clarity, and common sense, John Danforth has given us a great gift: a lucid, powerful book that is at once reflective and instructive." (Jon Meacham, managing editor of Newsweek)

Danforth is not only a Republican, but a priest at that. But his views are refreshing as he discusses the extremism and religious control over our Republican party and how they have stepped over the line. Citing several different cases and events from recent news, he shows good examples to support his theories. Although Danforth speaks slowly and is monotone virtually the entire book, his thoughts are refreshing and keeps you interested. It's good to hear someone from the Right question their current party's motives.

I appreciate Jack Danforth's honest reflections and insights into a world that tempts self-righteous people with the promise of more power because they see themselves as "right". Without introspection or feedback there is no room for debates in good faith or discussions yielding all winners.

Jack's self-deprecating humor and very human circumstances are always refreshing to see among the powerful and lofty minds of America.

I was looking for a book about faith and politics but this is mostly politics and is at best disjointed.
