Cal and the crew of the Star Splinter are back!

Stranded on a godforsaken mining outpost and left with no choice but to eke out a harsh living, Sergeant Carly Becker dreams of the day she might once again fight the good fight. But with rumors of the military’s annihilation, she questions whether any fight remains, let alone a good one. To find out, she must miracle her way into Chalice City, then onto a ship to carry her off world. But Chalice is a poisonous metropolis in more ways than one, and to survive its soaring towers, her fight may begin far earlier than expected.

Having unleashed chaos and escaped mostly intact, Cal and his crew have scattered the pirates’ ranks and sent their deranged queen into hiding. But as one enemy falls, another rises. Ready to bring their savage game to a close, the Insidions are again making themselves known.

An ominous discovery with the potential to bring insight to the nature of their foe brings Cal and the crew a hard choice: to boldly investigate before the trail fades or to practice caution and steer well clear. But with the Insidion threat building and the fate of humanity teetering ever closer to the edge of oblivion, Cal fears caution is no longer an option.

And besides, playing it safe has never been their style.

I was hooked from the first prequel. The characters keep getting better it almost feels like a family, and I hated it for this book to end. Amazing story of survival awesome world building love the characters. Can’t wait for the next book to come out worth every penny.!!!

The series levels up here, in a couple of ways. First, this book gives us more complex supporting characters, ones who are shades of grey and maybe even more foe than friend. Second, there are some supporting character deaths. Third, there’s a new development to counterbalance the seemingly invincible Insidions that’s introduced in a unique and very entertaining way.

This is essentially two books proceeding on completely separate tracks the whole way through.
There’s an occasional reference and some clues, but any crossover or merger is left for a later book.

Track 1: it’s the ongoing story of Cal and his crew as they search for their missing android teammate and investigate the Insidion threat. There are several new characters that inject some cool alien variety into the team dynamic, including Blue and Shaggy.

Track 2: we meet a whole bunch of new characters, starting with Becky, and follow them as they fight their way from the bowels of a toxic city to the top. Yes, some of the bad guys are still hyperbolically evil. But, some of the good guys are delightfully layered.

I could have used a bit more humor. I felt like some of the regulars were shorted (like Jumper) or didn’t contribute much (scientist Kaia was mostly just along for the ride). And I’m not sure I buy some of the twists that are developing. But, I’m willing to withhold judgment because this series, and this book in particular, continue to impress me with fresh plots, worlds, and characters. If the next book was available, I’d be hard pressed not to plunk my credit down.

Sidenote: Another reviewer bemoaned the swearing, but I didn’t catch much … and most of it is of the “fekkin” variety instead of the actual F bomb,

You’re my boy, Blue!
