Fiddling for Freedom is inspired by African American slave and pioneer, Louis Southworth, who traveled the Oregon Trail as a young man in the early 1850s. During the Gold Rush, the Southworth's travelled to California. While there, Louis discovered gold. . . with his fiddle. He was able to make almost $1,000 playing the violin -- approximately $23,000 today. That was enough money for Louis to pay off his owner and buy his own freedom.
