When Lew Archer stops for a hitchhiker and finds a young man dying of a gunshot wound, he knows he has stumbled into a mess. In a matter of hours he is suspected by the law, hired by a target-shooting trucking magnate, and chasing a hijacked load of hooch and a band of sinners on the loose.

But unlike the previous audiobooks in the series the chapter breaks are a problem. The chapters are generally written to end in tautness, suspense, or even unexpected surprise. They require a break to feel what the author has intended or think about what just happened. This recording does a disservice to the author and the listener by immediately announcing the next chapter without so much as a pause to breathe.
I hope that this is the last time I’ll experience the issue in this series.
That’s a production critique this rating system doesn’t allow for except by using the overall star rating.
