MacKenzie Macauley, fifteen, has been admitted to the State University of New York, Buffalo campus. Academically, he belongs at SUNY. Socially, he feels frustrated. He cannot date college boys because of his age so he seeks out high school aged boys.

Crispin, Dylan, and Stew, characters from previous books in this series are MacKenzie's suitemates in Red Jacket dorm at SUNY. They help MacKenzie navigate the social elements of college life. Unable to date college boys, because of his age, MacKenzie becomes frustrated. Then, his life is devastated when both his parents are killed in an accident. Crispin and the others rally to support MacKenzie who becomes a ward of Cian Breslin, patriarch of the family. With the love, care, and help of the members of the family and college friends, MacKenzie's college life stabilizes.

Wayne Douglas, fifteen, a high school sophomore, meets and wants McKenzie as a friend, possibly more. However Wayne has an issue that might make their friendship unlikely. Two brothers, Pat and Ralph, have the ability to cause Wayne to suffer severe consequences if Wayne does not participate in their plan to abuse MacKenzie. Blackmailed by Pat and Ralph, Wayne is forced to participate in the attempted sexual abuse of MacKenzie. When MacKenzie learns Wayne's motivation, both work to remove the blackmail threat and resolve their issue.
