The acidly funny first book starring the subversive sleuth in one of the most successful mystery series of all time. Fletch is an investigative reporter whose methods are a little unorthodox. Currently he's living on the beach.

He's taking more than a little flak from his editor. She doesn't appreciate his style. Or the expense account items he's racking up. Or his definition of the word "deadline". Or the divorce lawyers who keep showing up at the office. So when multimillionaire Alan Stanwyk offers Fletch the job of a lifetime, which could be worth a fortune, he's intrigued and decides to do a little investigation. What he discovers is that the proposition is anything but what it seems.

Movie and book do diverge.

Had never read this until 2021, even though I have seen the movie at least 20 times.

Book written in 1978 and audiobook produced in 2018.

Cultural aspects of the book reflect the late 70’s.

The ‘who will done it’ aspect of the book was a bit more hard boiled than the movie, but the sarcasm and wit were still ever present, in many ways better in terms of jokes.

Although Chevy Chase’ portrayal of this character take things to an even higher level. Always had an impression that a lot of his acting in this movie was more improv, now I see he just did a great job acting the part and maybe the casting director was also a genius with this match.

Been at least 10 years since I previously read a Gregory McDonald book.

They are always well worth it and kudos to whomever at Blackstone Audio is getting more back catalog and out of print books produced in Audio!

Seen the movie a dozen times, book was excellent
