Book one in the bestselling mystery series that brought to life an iconic literary antihero of subversion and schemes

Fletch, investigative reporter extraordinaire, can’t be bothered with deadlines or expense-account budgets when it comes to getting his story.

Working undercover at the beach to dig up a drug-trafficking scheme for his next blockbuster piece, Fletch is invited into a much deeper narrative. Alan Stanwyk, CEO of Collins Aviation and all-around family man, mistakes the reporter for a strung-out vagabond and asks him for a favor: kill him and escape to Brazil with $50,000. Intrigued, Fletch can’t help but dig into this suspicious deal he’s being offered.

Dodging the shady beach police as his case begins to break open, and with his temperamental editor Clara pushing for his article, he soon discovers that Stanwyk has a lot to hide and this plan is anything but what it seems.

This was pretty good but really just okay. Some of the dialog is quick and funny... but the reader isn't the best with humor, or with doing women's voices. Horrible voices for women on this recording. Story has too many coincidences and perfectly working out situations... it takes away from any qualities that were cool in it.

Fun, but Just okay.

Really fun listen, good plot with a lot of twist and turns, the only thing to criticize was the distracting background music

Great plot, fun characters

Bobbie's sad life & tragic death brought reality to the story. All of the author's books are excellent.

D.J. Miller's entertaining reading voice.

Fletch is a man who doesn't always follow the rules and has an endless amount of fake names at his disposal. While investigating one mystery he gets pulled into another one and is able to balance the two. Where are the drugs coming from and why does this rich man want to die? The characters are interesting, not a dull one in the bunch. You'll meet everyone from druggies on the beach to bored rich wives at the club. The writing is tight and flows without endless descriptions and unwanted fluff. I enjoyed the story so much that when I realized I was almost to the end I grabbed the second book in the series without hesitation. The reader does a good job. He isn't dry and puts feeling into his work. I loved his attempts at female voices when they were called for. Since he reads the rest of the series, he and I are going to spend a lot of time together.

A fun story with interesting characters
