Roosevelt's Rough Riders...

When Luke Cardiff returns from college to his small family horse ranch in Missouri, he leaves Stella May, the girl he cares about, behind when he’s sent to Amarillo, Texas, to take care of family business. In the back of his mind, he’s always suspected there’s more to his horse-loving school teacher father than meets the eye.

While in Amarillo, he discovers that his father’s past life was one of violence, murder, and mayhem - something Luke’s mother was never allowed to talk about.

In Texas, Cardiff falls in love with a beautiful Mexican woman, but when he hears the call for volunteers for Teddy Roosevelt’s rough riders, he’s compelled to join. He tells her he’ll come back for her. Luke has grown up with a love of horses himself and is appointed sergeant of Remounts by Roosevelt. He follows the Rough Riders to Cuba and survives in the battle of San Juan Hill.

Once he’s back from Cuba, he reunites with his family in Missouri. Stella May informs him she’s been waiting for him so they can marry, but he has more than one obligation that forces him to return to the Southwest.

Will he be able to deliver a promise and reunite with the woman he loves, or will fate turn its hand?

Footprints of My Father by Kwen D. Griffeth is a great listen. I loved the historical storyline that dealt with Teddy Roosevelt and horse soldiers. The character of Luke Cardiff was so well done. The book does not paint a rosy picture of that time in history, but probably an accurate one. Paul J. McSorley was perfect in his narration of this book. He brings the characters to life and inflects the right emotions in his voice. I loved it!

I would recommend reading about Sam Moses before this book but it certainly isn’t necessary.
This book is well written and can easily stand on its own.
The story of Sam Moses Cardiff’s son Luke is set in the late 1800’s and includes the war in Cuba with the Spaniards to free the Cuban people.
An excellent book with the perfect narration.

This is a great story of about a boy stepping into his manhood and setting off on an adventure at the very tail end of an era and living to tell about it. It’s not heavy on combat or anything like that, but the narrative feels real, honest, and real stable. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I think the narrator did a great job and I really enjoyed hearing about TR and the Rough Riders from his perspective.

Great story of a man discovering himself.

A story of a young man seeking to identify with his father by going to war in the 1890's. His father was a great man of his time, and Luke becomes a great man in his.

Well-written, perfect length, and perfect execution by the narrator. A truly great listen!

I’ve listened to a good number of audiobooks at this point, and I can honestly say this story is one of the best I’ve listened to yet. I found myself emotionally involved from having my heart race with excitement, to having tears in my eyes with sadness. The manner in which the story was written was captivating as I didn’t want to stop listening. On top of that, the narrator Paul McSorley did a great job bringing these characters to life with his voice. Great job to both author and narrator.
