This is a gripping tale of bravery and the will to survive, the sometimes heart-breaking struggle for freedom, and the wonder and difficulties inherent in starting a life in a new country.

A child’s perspective on a families escape from Hungary

I really enjoyed this memoir, it transported me to Cold War Hungary. It is well written and paints a picture with the right amount of color and flavor. Full of detail and personal observations in a balance that kept me tuned in and curious for the next steps in the families exodus from Hungary. It’s hard to imagine a family clamoring for a better life, the trials of their attempts to leave their country and the eventual return a generation later. The voice of a young child beautifully filled in with a narrative that really works. A great read.
