The Ogden station manager couldn’t believe what he was being told.

The scheduled train from Granger was overdue by three hours. He’d suspected a mechanical breakdown or maybe even a derailment. But the engineer of the next train to use that track had just reported that he hadn’t found any signs of the train.

He had no idea how an entire train could simply vanish, but as he pondered the mystery, the head telegrapher came to his office and showed him a telegram that had been sent to Union Pacific headquarters. It was a ransom demand for $100,000. If it wasn’t paid within a week, the train and its 34 passengers would be blown up. He hurried out of his office and rushed through the early morning streets to tell the resident Union Pacific special agent of the kidnapped train. It was Nelson Cook’s problem now....

Very Good Book

This is one of the best Westerns of have ever read. The story takes place where I live in Wyoming and Utah along the Union Pacific tracks. One thing I like about C. J. Petit's stories is they have accurate geographical placement. They remind me of the early he gets girl Westerns of Louis La Amour. If you study the women of the West after the Civil War they had few options to make a living on their own. Getting well married was their primary goal. If single they could open a dinner, bakery, laundry, or as a terrible last resort prostitution. A dirty secret in the West was some parents burdened with daughters sold them to forced marriages, or to bordellos. C.J. Petit includes this reality in his books. Ghost Train we have Nelson Cook a Special Agent for the Union Pacific, who rescues the window Cassie Gray from a train hijacking by the evil Jack Rogers. It is instant romance in a believable progression.

Reading the reviews on the kindle side people complain of poor proofreading. What has been complained about there is not to be found in the Audible edition.

Wonderful romantic western story

Having read about 2/3 of Mr Petit’s body of work, I consider myself an educated reader of his western romance mysteries. Many have a similar format. This one stood out in a good way. It was an easy, enjoyable listen. Just enough action, intrigue, culture, comedy and a little sophisticated romance without the abuse or rape seen in so many of his others works. If you like Mr. Petit’s westerns, sit back, enjoy you are in for a treat. It still amazes me that he wrote almost 109 books in the last eras of his life after having had a full career. Im treading as many in order as possible and I only wish that he could have written many more. He was a refreshing talent.

A new direction

This a phenomenal book of mystery, suspense, trains, and cunning. It begins with a real boom and ends so beautifully. This would be a great book for a teacher’s classroom and school’s library.

Rolling Read!!!
