The heroes and heroines of myth and folklore always have to overcome extraordinary challenges: and more often than not, these challenges involve a giant, a ghost, or a goblin. Jerry Nelson, the voice behind some of the most famous characters in children's television, including Sesame Street's Count von Count, narrates this action-packed collection. His inventive repertoire of growling giants and squeaky goblins will delight young listeners as the drama of the stories sets their imaginations on fire. Young listeners will love meeting characters from China to Norway and beyond, and they'll be full of tales to thrill their friends at school!Listen to more children's favorites from Barefoot Books.©1999 John Matthews Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Myths Collections & Anthologies Literature & Fiction Fantasy Scary Stories Classics

Critic reviews

"An interesting collection - some charming stories, some too gruesome for younger children - all narrated in a down-to-earth country twang by Jerry Nelson. Although his male voices are more realistic than his female ones, he manages to convey, through tone and inflection, that all will end well." ( AudioFile)

This is another interesting collection of folktales from Barefoot Books. We enjoy many of their titles and we’ve read and enjoyed this one in particular. However, the narrator Jerry Nelson absolutely butchers every female voice in each story. The characters come off as vapid, stupid, clueless, or minor because of how his dreadful falsetto ruins their credibility. This is not how the actual stories are meant to be reads!! This review is not a criticism of the writing but a warning against the annoying narration. Skip it!!!
