In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which the heavens are replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.

Impressively researched, eloquently delivered and thought provokingly contextualised. A brave demonstration of freedom of expression and even braver attack on censorship. If atheists had an order of beatification, the author should be remembered as St Hitch.

Christopher Hitchens was preaching to the converted with me but I so appreciate his sharp wit, undeniable logic and succinct style. He should have got someone with a clearer, crisper voice to narrate. The mumbling left me irritated. I am sure he was narrating this over a few glasses of whisky. What started badly, got worse as the chapter progressed. I’ve twice abandoned the ‘book’. I’m not going to try again. It’s not worth the irritation. In full disclosure- I wear hearing aids. But - I do not have the same experience with other narrators. For this book I have turned my hearing aids up as far as the volume will allow - but it’s not the volume. He swallows the words

The narration was awful
