What Goodknight doesn’t have is height. He stands just four-foot-four-inches tall, well below the minimum height for military service when World War Two broke out. However, his education qualified him for Army Intelligence and he spent the war years in Europe, gathering information on Nazi Germany and then Japan.
After the war, Goodknight did not go into the family oil business, but instead used his Amry Intelligence experience to open a private detective agency in Manhattan.
Thirteen-years later, Goodknight operates a large and successful agency of retired police detectives. His right hand man is a woman named Glenda, a six-foot-tall redhead that he is secretly in love with, but because of his height, is afraid to tell her.
Goodknight falls into a deadly trap the day Mr. and Mrs. Timsdale come to see him about their missing daughter, Gloria. Gloria, a beautiful, young woman that worked for Congressman Pope, a powerful New York Congressman, disappeared one day in Washington DC, two years earlier. The police and FBI failed to find her or build any sort of kidnapping case. Desperate, the Timsdale’s, on a recommendation from the New York State Attorney General, an old friend of Goodknight, came to Goodknight for help.
Goodknight recognizes that Gloria is long gone and taking the assignment would be fruitless, but he agrees to give it a look and thus enters the sleezy world of Congressman Pope, a world that puts Goodknight, Glenda and his entire crew in mortal danger.
