This Penguin Classic is performed by Harry Lloyd, known for his roles in Game of Thrones, and The Theory of Everything. He is a relative of Charles Dickens. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by David Trotter.

A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor - these form a series of events that change the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickens's haunting late novel depicts Pip's education and development through adversity as he discovers thetrue nature of his 'great expectations'.

I struggled a little with this book. I wonder if i had picked a different narrator if it would have been better. His accent adds to the story but when he talked for the convict he mushed his words together and i had difficulty following it.

How beautiful a story it is, and how intriging when the story comes to the third part. The performance was done so well that through the different tones of roles we can tell the minute difference of their characters.

After my distaste for David Copperfield, I’m shocked to admit I really loved this book. The twists he gave to the normal Victorian novel/storyline made this stand out. This felt much more atmospheric and romantic than just a standard coming of age story, and with connections and an ending I didn’t expect. Additionally the narrator was out of this world and brought the usual melange of Dickens characters to life. Well worth the credit, no regrets.

There’s not much that hasn’t already been said about the brilliance of Dickens’ stories and writing style so I’ll address the narrator. Harry Lloyd is nothing short of astonishing. Every single character came completely to life thanks to the distinct accents, cadence and the personality he infused them with. I often forgot it was one man reading to me and not an entire cast of actors. He’s the best of the best that Audible has to offer.
