A magnificent saga of two proud and powerful families - one British, one African - and their battle over Kenya's destiny in the 20th century.

In 1917 Dr. Grace Treverton arrives in Kenya determined to bring modern medicine to the African natives. Her brother, Sir Valentine Treverton, has his own dream for the British protectorate: to establish an agricultural empire to rival any in England. The aspirations of the wealthy Trevertons collide with those of the Mathenge tribe, an African family that has lived on the land for years. Grace soon finds a deadly rival in Mama Wachera, an African medicine woman who fights to maintain native traditions against the encroaching whites. After Wachera curses the Trevertons, a series of tragedies threatens to destroy what the once-great family fought to create. But the fates of future generations of these two remarkable families are inextricably bound.

A bold and brilliant achievement, Green City in the Sun brims with all the drama, violence, and fierce beauty of the Kenyan landscape.

Critic reviews

"Wood's skill as a writer of well-crafted, impressively researched romances is growing. With this engrossing saga, set in Kenya from the early 1900s to the present day, she should achieve a breakthrough to readers who look for literary competence as well as a good story." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Wood shows herself a wizard at juggling action and romance, maintaining the momentum and sparkle of both." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Wood makes her fiction come alive with authentic detailing and highly memorable characters." ( Booklist)

What made the experience of listening to Green City in the Sun the most enjoyable?

The story is priceless. Timeless. The narrator is good.

What did you like best about this story?

That the auhor herself went there and wrote about it. The historical facts. The Treverton family and the Wachera family's history.

What does Edie Tusor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'd say that if it wasn't for her, I would be able to listen and do chores with my hands busy at the same time.

If you could take any character from Green City in the Sun out to dinner, who would it be and why?

David Mathenge. He's looking like he could kind of my type.

A True Masterpiece

A family history saga, with beautiful description of place and life as it was in Kenya. I enjoyed it because Nairobi and the parks I visited: Ambrosseli, Ole Prejeta, and Masaii Mara near Sand River all feature in the book. So it was fun to have seen the locations described. I think it was actually better that I read it right after I returned as the locations were much more familiar to me.

Fun if you are going on Safari in Kenya
